Late May early June on the Blackfoot is a dicey time but while we all wait for Salmonflies many huge fish are caught. This year the river is in great "BIG FISH" shape right now and I plan to be hitting it a bunch from here on out. Salmonflies should be around in a week maybe 10 days. It all depends on the weather. The river will be in an out of shape with rain if we have some heavy storms on the south and east sides of the drainage but it can produce even in only 1 foot of visiblity. If you need a fishing fix, don't wait for the bugs, get out there an fish for some pigs with streamers and nymphs. Don't forget the beer in case the river decides to be tough cause that can happen during these conditions.
I recall a day a few years ago that my wife and I got to fish together. A rare event these days. This is what the river looked like.
Not too appetizing I know but the fish were out and playing quite well. Nothing like a couple 22"ers on a bright sunny day.
Don't to be out done. I managed to land the largest rainbow I have seen on the Blackfoot on the good old JJ Special. This monster hit the 25" mark. We see way more of the really big ones when the water is like this. It may not be dry fly fishing but It sure makes for a great day on the water.
I should start posting up results with allot more regularity as the summer season is starting and I will be out a bunch this next week.
